Did you know that the most deadliest driving hazard is rain? In fact, even though winter conditions such as ice, and snow generate their share of accidents, wet conditions are generally more common and drivers tend to be less cautious in wet conditions than when driving on ice or snow. Because rain causes slippery conditions on the road and decreases driver visibility, there is likely a higher risk of rain related accidents, especially in Atlanta.

Rainy conditions pose many unique dangers that increase the chances of serious traffic accidents. Hydroplaning is just one of the most serious dangers presented to automobile drivers while driving in the rain. Hydroplaning results in automobile accidents because they can cause a sudden change in the vehicle’s speed and/or direction of travel. Hydroplaning can also cause the driver to lose some or all steering and/or braking function which can result in the driver losing control of the vehicle.

If you are a resident in Georgia, or if you are visiting, please consider the following precautions to help decrease your chances of being involved in an accident due to slippery conditions.

  • Drive slower than the posted speed limit during a rain storm.
  • Remain three car lengths away from the vehicle in front of you.
  • Keep your windshield defogged by turning on your defrost.
  • Turn your headlights on to create visibility for yourself and other drivers around you.
